Dunklin Funeral Home History

J. H. Dunklin & Company was founded in 1891 by James H. Dunklin II (Center in picture: “Mr. Jim”) as a general mercantile and hardware store in Greenville, Alabama, and grew its many lines of business over the years. A 1931 Greenville Advocate article listed the many lines of business that Dunklin Hardware offered: hardware department, furniture department, undertaking department, plumbing department, building supply and roofing department, and farm implement and supply department. After the death of Mr. Jim in 1932, John Rutledge Dunklin (Right in the picture: “Rush”) managed the hardware store until his death in 1965.

After returning from World War I, then the University of Alabama in 1921, James H. Dunklin Jr. (Left in picture: “James”) began managing the undertaking department within the hardware store until the joint venture with Brown Service moved the funeral home to its present location in 1963. James successfully operated Dunklin Funeral Home until his death in 1966. This same 1931 Greenville Advocate article wrote, “With a service of dignity and refinement, the undertaking department of the Dunklin company…endeavors to the utmost to relieve those bereaved of as much care and responsibility as possible.”

In 1974, Mr. Don Herndon bought Dunklin Funeral Home from the Dunklin family, renaming it Dunklin Herndon Funeral Home and operating it until 1992, when he sold it to a large funeral home conglomerate.

In 2004, Don Daniels and family purchased and operated the funeral home under Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home until they sold it in 2017 to a funeral home corporation.

James H. Dunklin IV (“Jim”), the fifth-generation Dunklin, purchased the funeral home on November 10, 2020, and looks forward to providing families with the same local love and care that the Herndons, Daniels, and Dunklins of old used to provide.
