Obituary

Sara McQueen Smith, a cherished matriarch and devoted educator, peacefully departed this life on January 29, 2026, just days shy of her 100th birthday. She was a beloved resident of Montgomery, Alabama, who had roots in Greenville, where her life's journey began.

Born on February 7, 1926, Sara took pride in her education, graduating high school from Greenville High School before earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Montevallo. A life dedicated to education, she served with grace and commitment in both the Alabama and Florida education systems prior to her retirement. Her passion for teaching and nurturing young minds touched the lives of countless students over the years.

Sara was a woman of deep faith, a devoted member of Heritage Baptist Church in Montgomery, where she spent many fulfilling moments sharing her love for God and community. Her warmth and kindness were felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

She leaves behind a loving family who will carry her spirit and legacy forward. Her son, Milton C. "Mack" (Judy) Smith, III, and daughter, Kelli Smith (Greg) Chambers, were blessed to call her mother. Sara was also the proud grandmother of Chad Chambers, whose life she filled with guidance and affection. A beloved sister-in-law Gracie Hall of Montevallo. The family lineage continues with several nieces and nephews, who will remember her with fondness and gratitude.

Sara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Milton C. Smith, Jr., with whom she shared 62 beautiful years of marriage. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Lamar "Mott" McQueen and Doris Rogers McQueen, whose love laid the foundation for her to build her own family. She is also preceded by her siblings, Warren McQueen, her beloved brother, and two wonderful sisters she shared her childhood with, Doris DeBellis and Carolyn Weeks.

As we gather to celebrate her remarkable life, Funeral Services will occur on February 7, 2026,beginning at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Dunklin Funeral Home with Doctor Teman Knight officiating, the family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to service time. Graveside services will immediately follow at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery with Dunklin Funeral Home directing.

In remembering Sara, we honor a life rich in love, service, and unwavering faith. She will forever be in the hearts of those she touched, leaving behind a profound impact that will resonate for generations to come.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made in her memory to Heritage Baptist Church Worship Fund.
