Obituary

Samuel Joel “Sam” Kelley, a longtime resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026.

Born on September 11, 1951, to the late Vastine and Louise Cauthen Kelley, Sam devoted his working years to his craft as a fabricator with Structural Wood and Da For Engineering and Timber Fabrications. He took pride in working with his hands and was widely known for his steady workmanship, practical mindset, and straightforward approach to life. A private man of few words, Sam often spoke in dry humor—rarely meaning much of what he joked about—but he held close the things that mattered most to him: family, routine, and a well-timed cup of coffee. Though reserved and occasionally gruff, his love was evident through quiet dependability, a strong work ethic, and consistent acts of service.

Sam was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sarah Frances Kelley; his son, Yancey Kelley; his brother, Kendrick Wayne “Buck” Kelley; and his sister, Betty Joyce Gafford.

He is survived by his loving partner, Brenda Jackson; his brother, Herman (Annette) Kelley; and his cherished granddaughters, Jasmine Kelley (Cody) and Krista Kelley (Austin). He also leaves behind two great-grandsons, River and Grayson, all of Luverne; two aunts, Anna Laura Kelley Barganier of Greenville and Vela (Gilbert) Pugh of Pine Apple; a special niece, Sheila (Chuck) Lear; along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Serving as pallbearers will be Curtis Cobb, David Stallings, Chuck Lear, Jake Pratt, Michael Kelley, and Jake Kelley. Buster Wilson will serve as honorary pallbearer.

A graveside service will be held on April 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at County Line Church of Christ, with minister Jerry Barlow officiating. Family will receive visitors one hour prior to service in the church. Following the service, the family invites all in attendance to join them for a meal and a time of fellowship.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Crenshaw Community Hospital, Luverne Health and Rehabilitation, and Southern Care Hospice for their compassionate care and dedication to Sam and his family. Special appreciation is also expressed to Sam’s longtime physician, Dr. Walker, along with the nurses and staff, for their exceptional care, kindness, and support.

Arrangements are entrusted to Dunklin Funeral Home of Greenville, Alabama.
