IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael Oakley
Mcferrin
September 23, 1940 – August 14, 2025
Michael Oakley McFerrin of Tuscaloosa died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at the age of 84.
Born in Greenville, AL, he graduated from Greenville High School and the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He served as an officer in the United States Army and later, the Alabama National Guard.
He was the estimator for Robert Romaine Concrete Company for many years and owned McFerrin & Company in Tuscaloosa. Michael's strong work ethic was passed on to his progeny - you could always count on him for a good lesson in the value of hard work.
Known fondly as Poppy to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Michael knew how to tell a story. Poppy could be found making friends and telling stories of his adventures traveling as a young man, in the army as a Combat Engineer Unit Commander and Green Beret, and later, in the construction industry. He never met a stranger, and you could guarantee he knew your neighbors better than you did after a visit. He always made sure everyone was taken care of and, in particular, wanted to make sure you checked your oil and filled up your gas tank before you drove anywhere.
In his later years he could be found in constant companionship with one of his 3 border collies, Max, Holly, and Sam or whistling to his parakeet, Tweety Bird. He always had a treat hidden in his pocket for his own pets and the rest of the neighborhood's animals.
Michael was predeceased by his parents Oakley L. McFerrin and Irene McBride McFerrin of Greenville, AL.
He is survived by his beloved spouse of 64 years, Sherry Romaine McFerrin, and their children Mendy McFerrin Barry (Michael) of New Orleans, LA and Michael Oakley McFerrin, Jr. of Santa Rosa Beach, FL. He is also survived by grandchildren Megan Barry Kepper (David), Owen Barry (Florence), Robert Barry (Hannah), Catie Barry and Barrett, Olivia, Sophia, and Oakley McFerrin as well as great-grandchildren Corinne, Conway, and George Kepper and Harley and Molly Barry. He is also survived by his brother Edward McFerrin (Nicki) of Greenville, AL., his brother-in-law Jimmy Romaine (Marsha) of Tuscaloosa, AL., cousin Susan McFerrin Foster (Bob) of Greenville, AL., and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Kathy Romain and the ACG Hospice staff for their loving care of Michael to the end. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.
