Obituary

Mrs. Hazel Mallette Horn, (99) of Greenville, Alabama, joined the Church Triumphant on October 12, 2022.  She was born on July 21, 1923, to Elmer Lee Mallette and Izettie Campbell Mallette in Dozier, Al., the middle daughter of three.  Mrs. Horn was predeceased by her parents as well as two sisters, Elna Ree Mallette Harrison and Mary Mallette Layton, both former residents of Greenville.  Thomas Richard Horn Sr., her children's father, also preceded her in death.  Survivors include: a son, Thomas Richard Horn Jr. (Dianne) of Birmingham, Al.; a daughter, Claire Horn Miller (Donald) of Prattville, Al.; four grandchildren, David Richard Horn (Amy) of Birmingham, Norman Harrison Miller (Dashiell) of Prattville, Merrill Miller Carroll (Barry) of Prattville, and Lauren Horn Leon (Eduardo) of Auburn; seven great grandchildren, Campbell, Caroline and Ward Miller; Anna Claire and Bryant Carroll; and Emily and Noah Leon; a nephew, James Lee Layton (Becky) of Carrollton, Ga; and a niece, Susan Harrison Lincoln (Don, deceased) of Perry, Fl. Mrs. Horn worked nearly 40 years before retiring from the State of Alabama Department of Human Resources.  She was active in the Pilot Club of Greenville and the Father Ryan Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.  Mrs. Horn was the oldest living member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville and active in its many ministries for 70 years.  Coming from a large extended family who loved music, food and laughter, Mrs. Horn enjoyed being with people, traveling and entertaining in her home.  She helped others as she was able, sharing home-cooked food, good books and eloquent prayers.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church (P.O. Box 525, Greenville, Al. 36037), The Greenville Public Library (309 Ft. Dale Rd., Greenville, Al. 36037) or the Greenville Fireman's League (P.O. Box 158, Greenville, Al. 36037).   Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at Magnolia Cemetery, Greenville, Al. The family will receive friends at Dunklin Funeral Home beginning at 1:00 p.m. The family is deeply appreciative of the loving care provided by the staff at Country Place Senior Living, the staff of Southern Care Hospice of Greenville, Dr. Brandon Slagley, and caregivers Hazel Derrico, Cornelius Powell, Patricia Scott, Ruby Bennett, Arzell Johnson and Minnie Lewis.
