Obituary

Faye Wood Allen passed away peacefully in her sleep in the afternoon of Sunday, July 22nd 2012 following a long illness.

Faye was born on a stormy day in March to Howard and Maud Wood at their rural home in 1931. She was raised there on the farm with strong ties to the surrounding community and countryside. She took an early interest in art, and graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelors in Art Education in 1955. In June of that same year, she married the love her life, and fellow Alabama graduate, Algernon Allen.

Newlywed, the couple moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Al pursued a Masters in Medical Illustration, and Faye taught elementary art. In 1959 they moved to West Lafayette, Indiana, where they welcomed the birth of their son William James that November.

Never one to sit idle, Faye continued to share her love of art through teaching in the West Lafayette school district. After retiring from formal teaching, she continued to organize art-centered activities for the children of the Church of the Good Shepherd community, of which she and Al were active members.

In 1982 Faye discovered a deep and lasting love for poetry and writing. She founded the Grandville Poets writing circle and authored a biography of her ancestor, David Alexander Wood.

An eager traveler, Faye took every opportunity to find new experiences, always carrying with her a timeless elegance and genuine southern charm.

In December of 2011, she moved to Oregon to be closer to her son Will and his family.

Faye was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Maud Wood, her brother Mack Wood, her husband Algernon Allen and their daughter Sylvia Allen.

She is survived by her son and his wife Alicia and their children Hollie, Shaylynn and Philip in Oregon. She is also survived by her brother Jackson Wood of Indiana, and her sister Barbara Phelps of Alabama and several nieces and nephews: Janet Foster, Russ Wood, Robin Wood and Rachel Wood, all of Alabama.

There will be a reception the evening of July 31st from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home. Church services for Faye will be held August 1st, 9:30 a.m. at Sardis Baptist Church on Halso Mill Road. Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery in Pigeon Creek, Alabama. Contributions can be made to Sardis Baptist Church or Ebenezer Cemetery. Arrangements will be handled by Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home of Greenville, Alabama.
