Mr. David Andrew Hayden, 66, a resident of Oak Hill, AL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 16, 2012. David is survived by his wife, Jan V. Hayden of Roanoke, VA; his son Zachary Hayden (Sharon) of Richmond, VA; daughter Erika Hayden of Roanoke, VA; Step-daughter Elizabeth Sachs of Edmonds, WA, Stepson Van Wilson (Anabella) of Nashville, Tn; ex-wife Suzanne S. Hayden of Roanoke, VA; and grandchildren Liam and Jesslynn Hayden, Thaddeus Sachs and Madeline Wilson. He is preceded in death by his father Andrew Hayden and his mother Jean Owen Hayden, and his brother Geoffrey Hayden. He is also survived by two sisters,Marcia Strecker and Lisa Brink, and several other relatives across the country.
Mr. Hayden was a national advocate and organizer for the marginalized and homeless. He was a Mennonite minister, receiving his Master of Divinity from Dominion Theological Institute, Presbyterian Church of America in McLean, VA. He had received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Delaware, in Newark, Delaware, with studies in economics.
He established the Justice House Community and Church in Roanoke, VA from 1985-1995. He was pastor at the Asheville Mennonite Church in Asheville Mennonite Church in Asheville, NC in 1984. He worked at lobbying for national-level policy change, and participated in the writing and introduction of federal legislation to restore funding for low-income housing, as well as emergency homelessness legislation. He organized national and local demonstrations,including the "Housing NOW!" event in Washington, D.C., and spoke at the rally of more than 250,000 people. He organized the New Exodus poor people's campaign, and was a national organizer of the "Save Our Cities, Save Our Children" march on Washington, D.C. He fasted for various periods of time (up to 48 days) as a call for women and men to open their hearts to the plight of the poor.
The Memorial Service will be held at Bethel ARP Church in Oak Hill, Alabama on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
