Obituary

George Carey Thompson, a resident of Greenville, Alabama, passed away at his home on May 23, 2025.

Carey was born prematurely at his home in the Central Community on December 10, 1940. He was the proud son of Haywood and Inez Thompson. He attended Central School and graduated from Greenville High School in 1959. He attended Howard College and earned his Masters of Science from Auburn University. He began his teaching career with Lowndes County Public School System and was the Georgiana High School Vocational Agricultural teacher until he retired in 1994.

Carey was a deacon at Antioch West Baptist Church for 56 years. He was a jack of all trades, a carpenter, and handyman. He was the co-founder of "Old Time Farm Day", teaching about old farm equipment, syrup making, growing cotton, corn, peanuts, vegetables and much more. He collected old farm tractors and equipment. It was fun to watch the tractors parade at this special event. Carey served as a Board Member of the Pioneer Electric Cooperative for 16 years.

Carey gave great programs for the Georgiana Garden Club for over 35 years. He made wooden and gourd bird houses, bird feeders, bottle trees, guys and gals made from tin, roosters from yard tools, and caterpillars from old springs. He never made anything that he didn't make one for all club members or donate for a door prize. He made kitchen cabinets for the Garden Club Log Cabin and a large "bottle tree" that was won by Eleanor Jones. For many years he helped the Club make and sell stew, proceeds of which helped pay for the upkeep and much needed repairs of the Log Cabin.

Carey was preceded in death by his parents Haywood Everett Thompson and Inez Mathews Thompson, brother Haywood Everett Thompson, Jr, and sister Maretta Countess. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carolyn Casey Thompson; his children Casey George Thompson and wife Chanda, Mark Everett Thompson and wife Jody; his grandchildren Stinson George Thompson and wife Hayden, Kennedy Thompson Langford, husband Andrew and their children Clayton and Fletcher, Coleman Alto Thompson, and Everett Marcus Thompson; his sister Ellamae Thompson Elder and brother Percy Thompson and wife Ada Sue.
